I don't think it's been talked of before on here, I was just watching Empire of The Sun and there's some magical moments in it and I wondered which moments you think were captured magically on film? I've made a list of a few of mine although it kept getting longer. I'm pretty such there's no spoilers in these.
Empire of The Sun - Bale in the crashed plane pretending to fly while his paper plane is the enemy aircraft.
It's a Wonderful Life - The ending obviously.
Badlands - The beginning of the film where the score is played and Sheen is walking down an alley.
Cool Hand Luke - Very beginning freeze frame on Newman laughing with theme tune. I'm not sure if this can count or if it would go into the coolest moments ever.
Almost Famous - Singing 'Tiny Dancer' on the tour bus.
Wizard of Oz - 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'
Raging Bull - The beginning shadow boxing with that wonderful music.
Lion King - Beginning animals coming to pride rock is just awesome.
Toy Story - Another Beginning 'You've Got A Friend In Me' playing.
The Notebook - The rain storm cutting short their boat ride leads to the kiss.
Love Actually - Nearly every conclusion to each story the sentimental stuff really works on me lol. Especially Keira reading the cards.
The Shawshank Redemption - The End.
Singing In The Rain - 'Singing In the Rain'
Fight Club - Ending 'Where is my mind' kicking in.
... ... ... Titanic - I'm king of the world and the Ending
My favourite bit which I usually bring up in these kind of threads is The Ballet in An American In Paris. This section which is 17 odd minutes is the single most perfect sequence in film from my money. It is a beautiful sequence of ballet with sets based upon paintings by the Dutch Masters. Incredible to look at.
In A Lonely Place - Bogart replays a murder he may or may not have committed and scares the bejesus out of the audience and the other two characters. It is something which is reminiscent of Mitchum's love and hate scenes in Night of the Hunter.
The Death of Mr Lazarescu - University Doctor, I rarely have ever leapt from my seat and started shouting at the screen before, but this is one moment which made me literally go nuts.
White Heat - The prison mess hall scene.
Cool Hand Luke - The eggs then the Jesus pose, it is a cool moment.
The Thin Red Line - Miranda Otto letter, this scene kills me everytime. I mean everytime.
Ali - The opening scenes set to the Sam Cooke concert, one of the best opening sequences.
At the Height of Summer - Lou Reed music, two people getting out of bed. Perfect cinema.
The Spy Who Came In From the Cold - What the hell do you think spies are? Moral philosophers measuring everything they do against the word of God or Karl Marx? They're not! They're just a bunch of seedy, squalid bastards like me: little men, drunkards, queers, hen-pecked husbands, civil servants playing cowboys and Indians to brighten their rotten little lives. Do you think they sit like monks in a cell, balancing right against wrong?
Force of Evil - John Garfield runs down the steps into Hell.
Rio Bravo - The song.
Enter the Void - The final scene which turns the film from an extremely impressive experiment in to a jaw-droppingly brilliant work of art
Wings of Desire - The first time we see Marion on the trapeze, chicken wings and all
Wings of Desire - Marion is sitting in her caravan as the film switches from black and white in to colour for a few moments
An American in Paris - The 17 minute ballet sequence. Too bad the rest of the film isn't that perfect.
Up - The three minute montage where we see Ellie and Carl growing up together: films rarely feel so genuinely heartfelt
Spirited Away - Every single god damned second
Eureka - The final scene in all its beauty and all its power
Ikiru - The swing. Just extraordinary.
Chungking Express - All of the second half and a fair few moments from the first. In particular Faye's montage scene as she messes around in the flat in the second half is a true joy.
Last Year at Marienbad - All of it. Its ability to put you in this strange, magical world with no time reference whatsoever is what makes it so brilliant.
West Side Story - The transition from the bridal shop to the dance hall. B. E. A. U. T. I. F. U. L.
West Side Story - Tony's and Maria's eyes meet across the dance floor. Everything else fades. They walk towards each other. Everyone slows down their dancing. Coloured sparkles fall. And they kiss. And we sit in utter amazement.
West Side Story - Maria dancing alone on the roof before she hears the bad news.
My Neighbour Totoro - The tree growing scene at night time. The only scene that has had me cry of happiness (though many scenes make me cry of sadness).
Silent Light - Sunrise. Sunset
Silent Light - The much debated Dreyer influence at the end - it is an incredible thing to watch
Aladdin - "A Whole New World"
Johnny Guitar- Lynch mob storms Vienna's
House By the River- First fifteen minutes are as seedy as hell.
Le Trou- A shocking reveal.
Chimes at Midnight- The battle scene.
Aguirre Wrath of God- Camera lingers on the wild muddy river.
A Canterbury Tale- Thomas Colpeper's speech to the squaddies.
Night of the Hunter- A fisherman finds a nasty scene lurking below him in the river.
Cottage on Dartmoor- Jealous barber goes into a delirious montage.
Partie de Campagne- The shutters swing open onto the garden.
Sullivans Travels- Convicts are summoned up from the swamps for cartoons at the church.
To Be or Not to Be- A bit of moustache swapping goes a long way.
