aquaman84: "I guess my favourite Hitchcock films would be Rear Window, Vertigo, Strangers on a Train and North by North-west. But I'm still watching - I recently recieved a massive box set of his as a gift and have only managed to watch The Trouble With Harry so far.

As for the Coens I would probably go for Fargo, The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou? but I like the majority of them - the only one I'm not a great fan of The Ladykillers."

Rear Window is one my favorites too, occasionally being ursurped by Suspicion. ;) Fargo and O Brother are my two favorite Coen films, possibly Barton Fink too. O Brother is very underrated, imo and I definitely agree about The Ladykillers. But wasn't Hanks great?

One of the biggest let downs of a film for me so far. I watched Blood Sinple after and I feel that if I hadn't seen Ladykillers before I wouldn't have been ble to apprecite its genius.

Sounds interesting. I like stories/plots that take place in a limited time like that, like a single night, day, and so on.

Well the basic plot is that the story follow 4 friends on a night out, it basically deals with all the situations that occur around then

Of course, realistically, I am looking at a film studies degree and 10 years of being a PA. Bizarrely, my parents have allowed me to watch films that anyone of my age should not be watching and hopefully this does not stunt my psychological growth (Mulholland Drive is one of my favourite films). I am looking to learn more from the community here who know much more than me in all aspects of film.

I live in a country where there is zero (or to not use the hyperbole, little) interest in films of artistic merit thus would love to make some film snob friends here to converse with.

True, but you'd be surprised how little films [or any sort of art] are valued among the general public. But I couldn't imagine being a film buff where such a thing practically doesn't exist, my sympathies.

Posted by: StormwindHello, I'm new. My real name is Francis I'm 27 and I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I'm new to the site though I listened to all the podcasts already, my only complaint is that there are too few of them. Though I do wish I had found this site sooner. I felt quite alone all of this time because everyone seems to like Hollywood garbage these days and I don't. Yet the films I like, everyone else seemed to find boring or simply couldn't understand them. Made me feel rather alone, it's nice to see people who can appreciate Cinema as a craft and an artform. Thanks for the site Mike, I found a home at long last.

Hi Francis. I agree with how you feel about most films today, most people seem to want the cinematic equivalent of a corndog.

I would like to say hello to both silence and Stormwind as they've joined us today. Both of you feel that film is underappreciated, a feeling all of us on here share with you. Mediocrity, as they say, is for the dogs, and it has certainly lead to a great deal of us, especially myself, to search for something different to watch or at least a selection to choose from, and a greater appreciation for film than it is given.

Hopefully this forum will be sufficient enough.

Well done mate!

And for a few words of congratulations, I give you WC Fields:

I was married once, in San Francisco. I haven’t seen her for many years. The great earthquake and fire of 1907 destroyed the marriage certificate. There’s no legal proof. Which proves that all earthquakes can’t be bad.

I believe in tying the marriage knot, as long as it’s around the woman’s neck.

Marriage is a two-way proposition, but never let the woman know she is one of the ways.

In marriage a man must give up many of his old and pleasant habits, even if it means giving up the woman he married.

Always have a woman sign a prenuptial agreement that if she leaves your bed and board, she takes off with as little cash as possible.

Marry an outdoors woman. Then if you throw her out into the yard for the night, she can still survive.

Marriage is better than leprosy because it’s easier to get rid of.

Never trust your wife behind your back, even if she claims she only wants to wash or scratch it.

An ideal start for matrimony would be to have a drunken Rabbi perform a Catholic ceremony in an Episcopalian church. Then it could be declared illegal in the courts.

I've always found that there are plenty of 'native' speakers who f*ck up the language worse than others learning it.

 Hi Everybody,

My name is Chris and I am from Melbourne, Australia. I am nudging 40 (which I hope doesnt exclude me :)) and love with a passion anything movie related and the people that watch or make, talk about and analyse, review and critique cinema and TV. From obscure sub-titled black & white films to blockbuster (Bay-esque - not quite Bay though) extravaganza's - love the excitement of opening day and the treat of catching a movie on its last days when no-one else is at the screening. Love it all - and I especially love the dedication of all forum contributors and their passion for the same.

I have been listening to Mike via his MYSS days and thru one of their forums learnt about "Left Field Cinema" - I know I know "what a dinosaur!!" - so I am glad that LFC is alive and kicking.

I look forward to reading and perhaps conversing with any or all of you at some stage.

It appears fashionable, so here is my Top 10: (in no particular order and subject to change frequently)

1. Hard Boiled
2. Singin' in the Rain
3. Frailty
4. Gallipoli
5. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
6. Hard-Boiled
7. Godfather Pt 2
8. The departed
9. Apocalypse Now
10. Full Metal jacket

Cheers

 Frailty:

Bill Paxton (what a superstar) directed Gothic Horror - starring Matthew MacConaughey & Powers Boothe - I cant say too much about the plot because it would spoil this for you, but Fran do yourself a favour and grab a copy, turn off all the lights and dont take your eyes off the screen for a minute.

Basic premise is: father looking after his 2 sons has a vision of God and is told to hunt demons, he is visited in the night and told who these demons are, and off he trots with his kids to dispatch them. Now while this might be starting to sound like the premise for Supernatural TV show, please trust me - i did say "basic"premise.

Hope you get a chance to watch it Fran.
Not really a warning, there's a sort of 'charm' to rural areas [at least around here in New York state], but I cannot say for 'the South'. *lightening and dramatic music*

What is Hull like? An out of the way rural town/village, far from any conceivable essence of 'culture', an old, slowly dying industrial center? Or am I just describing my neck of the woods? :D

Sorry for calling you Michael, i was being polite for my first post. In regards to the order of listening i downloaded them all with the full intention of listening from the beginning and then i saw the Odd Man Out one so i listened to that, then Satantango, then Memories of Murder, then comparing The Departed and Infernal Affairs, then Memento in relation to Reception Theory and then any sense of order was thrown out of the window. I was like a kid in a candy shop. I'm probably about three quarters the way through but I'm not rushing too much because then that's it, I'll have to wait a week for each installment!

In regards to Hull, it is indeed a small industrial city. It was no.1 in the crap town guide because it "smells of death and the threat of violence hangs about in the air", which could be a lot of places really. But it's dire for film. Our local arthouse cinema, which wasn't even that good shut down about six months ago. Phillip Larkin is indeed one our few local heores, but he wasn't from Hull. The most famous person was probably William Wilberforce who helped abolish slavery, although Tom Courtney was a local lad. And that's about as exciting as i gets.
