7/10 Binoche gives a fine performance but her co-star is an opera singer and is out acted by her at every opportunity. Worth watching once. I suggest a rental.

I would rate the film a 8/10 but would advise renting it first as well. It is a different film from Taste of Cherry but its unconventional narrative (alongside Bonoche's co-star) may not to be everyone's taste.

My reasons for liking the first one was for the relationship between Bella and Edward. The actual story however is extremely redudant and generic, so that may be an issue.

I genuinely like the first two. They are rubbish, but they are also pretty good at the same time. You could cruxify them if you had a mind to, but I quite enjoyed the nonsense of them. They glitter, she's miserable, it's a laugh.

All four in my opinion. Alien: The Directors Cut and Aliens Special Edition are perhaps one point down on their theatrical equivilants, the former including some silly scenes that pretty much ruin the films that follow by changing the alien life cycle; the latter is just too damn long and it's pretty much an hour before anything happens. Overall the originals are tighter leaner beasts, but there is some good stuff in the directors cuts as well. Alien 3 however is a different story, I think the Unauthorised Extended Cut is a much meatier and fullfilling film, was just a shame they didn't get the money to do it properly...

I have on occasion argued that Alien Resurrection is the best Alien film. And I am going to stick by that. So thumbs up for Resurrection from me.

I just ignore the very existence of Alien Resurrection, it belongs to some parallel universe version of the Alien franchise; I'd sooner watch the AVP movies.

It might just be the Whedon fan in me (and I have read that even he hates the film because it buggered up his script) but there are enough moments of the ginger wonder, Rol Perlman and Winona Ryder to keep me entertained to the end. Also, it helps I am not in love (I recognise the quality but...) with the first two; nor have I re-evaluated the quality of the third.

Film Socialisme sounds interesting (and I've heard mostly amazing things from the people I follow on Mubi), and A Separation sounds great, but I agree with Chris that you should just see The Tree of Life on its own. After watching it myself I had an hour or so lying down on the bed letting things float through my mind, you really will get a lot more from your first watch if you have it as the main focus of the day in my opinion.

Yes, I think that particular Triple Bill would kill me too... I think the alternative would be to see 4 films in Norwich over 2 days next week... on Sunday, they are showing Days of Heaven & Tree of Life, back to back... (not seen DoH in over 5 years...)

I really want to see Film Socialisme, even more so than The Tree of Life. The only issue is that, as I've delved into Godard's career, I've found his short work and his views outside films to be far more potent and interesting than the feature films. If this is anything like the first and final parts of Historie(s) du cinema though that would be fantastic.

I haven't seen a lot of Godard's later work either sadly, but since Madcap has seen the short Origins of the 21st Century, I would recommend he hunts down Historie(s) du Cinema. Its the same video essay style extended to a series, and is more about the director's reflections on cinema upfront than complex politics, so it will be less daunting.

L.627 is a pretty good film; however do not start with In the Electric Mist because it is bollocks.

I must point out I've only seen six or seven of his films so don't take this as in any way definitive. If you enjoy Theatre of Cruelty then you might like to watch Satan's Brew, but that really is out there and completely random; I prefer it when there's more character and story in his films as he doesn't have a strong enough sense of beauty to pull off the disjointed anti-narratives he sometimes dabbles in.

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964) and This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse (1967) should be seen by any cult film fan, even if I wasn't fond of them, while Strange World of Coffin Joe (1968) is an interesting anthology work. The rest of the films, having not seen the documentary in the set mind, were awful - if you are not fond of very low budget, exploitations film, you will hate them.

I love the novel, it is one of Roth's best, which makes it one of the best of the last 20 years, an incredible piece of literature. I thought the film was pretty decent, though with enough knowledge of the book to fill in any gaps in the film's logic. It is worth a watch, with most of the performances pretty good, but it is not a stunning film, the book is immesurably more impressive.

I would imagine the Criterion is better as always but the Artificial Eye release is fine although hard to get hold of now

Saw it the other night, friend of a friend worked on the film so got a screener, think it's out here this month...

It's pretty good actually, Jeremy Irons and Paul Bettany steal the film, but the rest of the cast do well too. Some good moments, a little repetitive and it does "hollywoodize" the financial crisis to the point where it is just selfish people in rooms knowing exactly whats about to happen but doing it anyway because they're so selfish. A tad simplistic but entertaining.

Very well reviewed in the US with more than one critic citing it as the best dramatic film ever made about Wall Street. Am looking forward to seeing it at the weekend.

The rule of thumb with Close Encounters (which I regard as one of Spielberg's masterpieces) is any version that doesn't have the footage inside the alien craft at the end. To be honest, I can't rightly remember if this is the director's cut or the special edition now but either way, the theatrical cut is perfect and the best place to start for those that haven't seen the film before.

As a further pointer, Spielberg has since stated that he is very much against revisionism and even regrets removing the reflection in the glass separating Harrison Ford from the cobra in Raiders which they did for the DVD. So I imagine that Spielberg's preferred cut is likely the theatrical too.

Yes, I watched the special edition, and that is the one with stuff inside the spaceship. I don't love the film like you do, but I respect it, and I agree it is worse with the stuff inside the spaceship. I believe that the Director's cut omits that stuff.

As Alec says there is not difference between the two, in fact all of Michael Mann's directorial cuts are fairly similar to their theatrical and none of them are worth paying extra cash for. (Mind you an extra couple of quid might be worthwhile for the version of Mohicans without Clannad warbling along).

And has anyone seen or planning to go see Alec's favorite Belgian duo ; The Dardennes latest The Kid With The Bike another film which seems to be getting unanimous praise.

On a slightly higher brow note has anyone read the Hunger Games books and are they any good. I need something light and fun to break up the awesome Game Of Thrones
