Plot Summary:
When a poor village gets attacked repeatedly by bandits in 17th century feudal Japan, its leaders appeal to Kambei, an unemployed samurai (Takashi Shimura) to help them. Kambei proceeds to recruit five more, and along with another unsolicited member (Toshirô Mifune), they accept the village's offer in exchange for food and shelter. As they train the villagers and themselves to face the bandits in the upcoming harvest season, numerous conflicts with the villagers and within themselves arise.
